From the 1970s to the 1990s, a family living in a Beijing hutong struggled with poverty and hardship. Hoping to escape their circumstances, two brothers each forged their own path in life. The older brother focused more on the meaning of life itself, finding joy amid hardship and living life to the fullest. The younger brother was simple, willful, and given to heroic fantasies. He went through the recklessness of youth and a stint in prison. Through failure, pain, and struggle, he endured hardship and gradually matured. Neither material abundance nor the approval of others could bind him. Behind his success, he saw the complexity of human affairs and the cruelty of conflict, and came to a realization. He decided to follow the call of his heart and seek a pure spiritual home.
