(The early pacing is slow, but it really takes off later. For a faster start, you can begin at Chapter Three.) Shen Xiaoyu suspects she was cheated on in the modern world. She leaves home and goes abroad to clear her head, but somehow gets caught up in a mysterious case. While riding in her ex-husband’s car, she gets into an accident and dies in the sea. When she wakes up, she has unexpectedly transmigrated into the body of the legitimate daughter of Grand Tutor Shen in the Xiao Dynasty. Shen Xiaoyu resolves to live well in this world and complete the task given by the System so she can be revived in the world she once lived in.
In the fictional Xiao Dynasty, some books and written texts are the same as those in history, while many other things are different. With a studious and ambitious spirit, Shen Xiaoyu learns the law and trains in martial arts along the way. She wants to live independently in another way in this rigidly hierarchical ancient world.
As Shen Xiaoyu grows, she gains a kind maid and close friend in Xiao Hua, as well as a kindred spirit in music in Furong. Cui Mu, the eldest legitimate son of the Qinghe Cui clan, falls for her at first sight. She also crosses swords with the crown prince, both openly and behind the scenes. And her brief encounter with the heir of the Marquis of Zhenbei helps her understand what it means to put family and country first.
Shen Xiaoyu gains much along the way, though she stumbles through plenty of hardships. In the end, she takes the hand of the one she loves, and when she awakens from her great dream, all those she loves are by her side.
