Professor Liao’s Darling

At university, Liao Juntao confessed, “I like you.” I turned him down because I had my reservations. We ran into each other in Haicheng. He said, “Let go of the past, and remember to come find me.” I avoided him because of my hurt. When we met again, he was a professor admired by everyone, while I was a somewhat well-known art teacher and part-owner of a coffee shop. He didn’t press me for an answer. He simply found his way back into my life, little by little: He knew I didn’t eat cilantro, so he always added “No cilantro” to our orders. He knew I was afraid of the dark, so after I worked late, he always drove me home. He knew how much my grandmother meant to me, and cared even more than I did about her birthday banquet. When my ex came to cause trouble, he stepped in front of me. “He’s with me now. You have no right to touch him.” When my career hit a rough patch, he took my hand. “Don’t be afraid. I’ll get through this with you.” It turns out some people find their way back to each other, no matter how many twists and turns life takes. The best kind of love is when you need me, and I happen to be there.
