New Water Margin is a novel by Lu Shie, a novelist of the late Qing and early Republican period. A sequel to the 70-chapter edition of Water Margin that Jin Shengtan had cut short, it is a work with a character all its own. With imaginative ideas tinged with science fiction and a humorous style, the novel tells of the Liangshan heroes doing such unprecedented things as opening banks, building railways, and founding newspapers in modern China. These stories reflect various aspects of China's modernization at the time and explore in depth the relationships between economics, technology, and human nature. With its twists and turns and vivid characters, it is a highly distinctive and worthwhile sequel to Water Margin.
