How much longer do you expect me to love you?
They met in midsummer and parted in midsummer.
Dappled shadows from the trees fell across the classroom windowsills, the desks, the floor, and the curled-up figure.
The boy clutched his chest, struggling to breathe. The veins on his forehead bulged as if they might burst through his skin. Downstairs, a girl ran up in a panic, taking the steps two at a time.
She opened the classroom door and immediately spotted the boy leaning against the wall in agony. She rushed over and held him, calling his name again and again. “Xu Zhimo... Xu Zhimo... Zhimo...”
The boy held her close. At the sound of her voice and the warmth of her embrace, he gradually calmed down.
“I’d advise you not to get any closer to him, young lady. It seems you’ve become his allergy, replacing his family.”
The girl shuddered violently. Her voice was unusually hoarse as she trembled out, “Okay...”
“Yu Nian, where are you? I can’t find you. Come out! Come see me, will you? Yu Nian, damn it, say something!”
The boy stared around him, eyes bloodshot, searching the crowd for the familiar figure. But there was no sign of them.
The young man stood frozen in shock, letting the older man shove him. Staring at the gravestone, he asked in disbelief, “Yu Nian is dead?”
The story is told through flashbacks, so technically the main characters are adults. It starts at school and then moves to the city. A tragic ending!
