The River of Good Fortune

The Imperial Noble Consort killed my entire clan to monopolize the waters of our clan's River of Sons and Daughters.

Drink from the river, and you can have a boy if you wish for a boy, or a girl if you wish for a girl.

She sneered. "Then among His Majesty's consorts, I alone will be able to bear him an heir."

She ordered the River of Sons and Daughters destroyed, filling its channel with the bodies of my clanspeople.

Only I survived, having escaped to the mountains to gather medicinal herbs.

Later, I entered the palace with the only remaining pot of the river's water.

The Imperial Noble Consort didn't know that the river's water came in raw and cooked varieties.

Only my water could bring one blessed pregnancy after another.
