The Concubine Wants to Cultivate Immortality

[No romance] + [Not a self-sacrificing saint] + [Shows differing degrees of closeness] + [Realistic human nature] + [Mother-daughter relationship]

Set in an ancient cultivation world. Because of the strained mother-daughter relationship, among other things, the story includes some modern elements as needed. You can think of it as an ancient lost civilization with modern development.

Story:

Her father puts on airs of refinement,

and she is given the name Li Manlou.

She gets properly married.

During a famine, her husband goes missing,

and her mother-in-law schemes to make her the younger son's wife.

She raises her husband and two children.

Just as she finally catches her breath and no longer has to eat bran and pickled vegetables,

her missing husband returns from the immortal realm,

bringing his beloved wife and daughter.

He takes his mother and younger brother to the immortal realm, too.

Her brother marries someone in the immortal realm,

and she becomes a concubine.

Her ungrateful daughter lives happily with her father and his family,

while her dutiful son, too useless to amount to anything, is abandoned by his father.

She works herself to the bone, yet can't earn her son so much as a few coins...

Why can't she cultivate immortality, too?
