Ling Yun, an elite disciple of the Qingyun Sect, bids farewell to Yun Shu, his junior sister who grew up with him, and sets off to gain experience and seek treasures. In an ancient sacrificial altar, he unexpectedly obtains the legendary supreme treasure, the Nine Heavens Divine Jade. But possessing such a treasure brings disaster: three immortals join forces to hunt him down, and he dies in the mortal realm, in the Great Zhou Dynasty.
Hua Yun, the only son of the Hua family, is murdered for his wealth by his concubine Taohong and his cousin Hua Cheng. They seize his property, force him to drink poisoned wine, and dump his body in a mass grave. By chance, Ling Yun’s soul, searching for a new host, discovers him. With the power of the Nine Heavens Divine Jade, Ling Yun is reborn in Hua Yun’s body.
From then on, the good-for-nothing Hua Yun, born without a Spiritual Root, defies fate and rises step by step. With the help of the Nine Heavens Divine Jade, he reaches the pinnacle of life, rising from leader of the Qingyun Gang to commander of a region, then to Marquis of Zhenbei, Prince of Zhenbei, and Regent.
He marries Hua Yun’s fiancée, Lu Wanqing, the county magistrate’s daughter; Zheng Yushan, whose appearance resembles that of his junior sister Yun Shu; Shen Qingqiu, a noblewoman fallen on hard times; and Ying Yue, a princess of Qin sent to marry for peace. All become his secondary wives.
Two years later, Yun Shu descends the mountain to gain experience and break through to the Nascent Soul Realm, taking a mission that sends her to the Great Zhou Dynasty. At last, the fellow disciples Ling Yun and Yun Shu meet again in the Great Zhou imperial palace and recognize each other. Ling Yun marries his junior sister Yun Shu, making her the Regent’s Consort.
Twenty years later, Ling Yun and Yun Shu return together to the familiar world of Cultivation. With the help of their master, Ling Xuzi, they place their souls into their original bodies and are reborn, setting out once more on the path of the Dao. A fragment of Ling Yun’s soul remains inside Hua Yun, returning to the mortal realm, where he ascends the throne and shares a life of wealth and honor with his four secondary wives.
The story ends with his final battle against the Demon King of the Heavenly Demon Sect. He defeats the king and seals the passage to the Demon Realm, succeeds to the position of Qingyun Sect Master, and, a hundred years later, ascends to the Immortal Realm together with Yun Shu after overcoming the tribulation.
