(If this isn't your thing, start at Chapter 8.)
The boundary between immortals and demons is not so clear-cut. In some ways, they can be two sides of the same coin, reflecting different facets of human nature.
How do immortals differ from demons? Both are facets of the human heart.
Between good and evil, the line is blurred and hard to discern.
Immortals ascend, riding the clouds and mist, seemingly beyond the mortal world,
while demons lurk in the shadows, where even a trace of compassion may hide.
In the eyes of the world, immortals are noble and demons are sinful,
but who can claim there is no immortal or demon within their own heart?
Immortals were once mortals too, and only attained the Dao after enduring hardship.
Demons are born from the heart; in a single thought, the cycle of good and evil takes hold.
On the stage of life, we are both immortal and demon,
playing different roles with every choice we make.
Sometimes we wave a sleeve and send down rain, saving those in need.
Sometimes we furrow our brows, fall into desire, and lose our way.
There is no difference between immortals and demons; it all comes down to a single thought.
Will you lay down the butcher's knife and become a Buddha, or cling to your obsessions and sink into the abyss?
We are all authors of our own fate,
searching for our true selves on the boundary between immortal and demon.
In the end, immortals and demons alike return to dust.
What remains is the trace of our deeds, not the emptiness of a name.
So let us embrace both the immortal and the demon within,
and use wisdom and courage to write our own legends.
