Possession

After graduating from college, Xu Tiantong took the police recruitment exam and passed both the written test and interview with ease, only to run into a problem at his physical: he wasn’t tall enough. While at the hospital for a height-increase procedure, he ran into an old man dressed entirely in black in the restroom. With the old man’s help, Xu Tiantong grew three centimeters, but was forced to agree to one demand…

During police training, Wu Junxia, a fellow trainee, was killed, and fellow officer Zhang Yao became a suspect. Xu Tiantong received a message saying, “Zhang Yao is innocent.” He was summoned to meet someone by a lake, but was pushed into the water and nearly drowned. In his daze, he felt someone carry him to shore. Instructor Chen from the training base told him, “You need to be more careful from now on. Come to me if anything happens.”

Xu Tiantong was drawn into the case. He saw a drowned child ghost in an apartment complex’s swimming pool, was harassed on the street by a yellow-haired hoodlum, and then the hoodlum’s girlfriend died for no apparent reason. While responding to another call, he found the head of the criminal investigation squad murdered at home…

Xu Tiantong asked Instructor Chen for help. Chen asked for his birth details, then was shocked after calculating his fate. “How could this be!”

After nearly half a year of investigation, Xu Tiantong finally figured out what had happened. To his dismay, he realized that there was no such thing as a windfall: from the moment he met that mysterious old man, he had fallen into a massive trap.
