Lu Yuan, an experienced criminal investigation captain, discovers a mysterious symbol at the scene of what appears to be an ordinary string of burglaries. The symbol brings back memories of an unsolved case his mentor investigated many years ago. His mentor vanished under strange circumstances while working on that case, leaving Lu Yuan with a mystery he has never been able to solve. Now that the same symbol has appeared again, Lu Yuan senses a connection between the two cases. He decides to retrace his mentor’s investigation, only to discover that the victims in the old case all belonged to the same secret society. The society is immensely powerful, with ties to both politics and business. Despite mounting pressure, Lu Yuan digs deeper, only to face suspicion and obstruction from former colleagues. Even his life is in danger. As he pursues the truth, Lu Yuan discovers that his mentor did not vanish after all: someone had secretly protected him, and that person was one of the society’s core members. The deeper the investigation goes, the closer Lu Yuan gets to the truth, only to discover that the real culprit is his most trusted partner, who got close to him to cover up the crimes of the past. In the end, Lu Yuan makes the agonizing choice between justice and friendship. He brings the criminal to justice, but loses both his best friend and his mentor. Once the truth comes to light, he resigns from the police and sets out alone to find his mentor.
