The core plot of the novel stems from a family property dispute. Zhi Zhongxin of Huanglou Village plans to sell a facade house in Huaizhou County because his daughter-in-law Wang Xiaoju is suffering from uremia and needs medical expenses urgently. However, the property does not legally belong to Zhi Zhongxin. It also involves his two younger brothers, but the two brothers are not aware of the existence of this property. In order to monopolize the proceeds from the sale of the house and prevent his brothers from claiming rights after the news leaked out, Zhi Zhongxin carefully planned a series of actions and created a fog that spanned more than 2,000 kilometers. His plan was closely related to Gongsun Yangui's trip to Yunnan.
Gongsun Yangui was originally a man who begged in a big city and built a high-rise building in his hometown of Huaizhou County. Due to changes in urban management policies, he returned to his hometown to find work. After hearing that there were many opportunities in Yunnan, he followed his fellow countryman Zhi Zhongxin to Yunnan, thus starting the main line of the narrative.
The story has a complex structure, involving multiple clues and many characters. Including the investigation of death incidents, the tracing of family secrets, the game of character relationships, and the action plan across provinces. Finally, all the clues are wrapped up in the chapter "The Succession of Incense", ushering in the finale.
