Tomb Raiding: I've Been Destined for Great Things Since Childhood

The autobiography of a master sand-reader.

[Tomb Raiding] + [Feng Shui]

My name is Shaozi. I went to Yunnan hoping to make a fortune gambling on jade, but Li Buping dragged me into Tomb Raiding instead.

On my first trip into a tomb, we pulled a piece of blank cloth from the back of an ancient corpse’s head. On the second, the dense rows of hanging coffins overhead nearly drove us to kill one another. On the third, in a Shang-Zhou tomb, we dug up three stitched-together monsters with beast heads and human bodies. Their bellies weren’t stuffed with treasure, but with human heads.

Li Buping said my knack for finding dragon veins and locating burial sites meant I was born for this line of work.

But the deeper we dug, the more wrong things felt. Every tomb held a secret about a “seal.” The legendary mausoleum of Genghis Khan, deep in the desert, wasn’t a mausoleum at all. It was a prison.

Nine iron chains bound the stone coffin, and black threads seeped out from within. The thing that people two thousand years ago had given their lives to seal away had been dug up by us.

“Make the body a coffin, and a nightmare its prison.”

Now, that thing has awakened.

And the jade token clutched in my hand is the only key.

Either we seal it away for good, or we all die together.
