A century of wind and rain, a furnace’s glow; half a lifetime in darkness, yet her eyes see clearly. Though she cannot see the world, the world has become just like her. This story is based on real events.
In 1921, in a family of goldsmiths in Shijiazhuang, a baby girl was born at dawn, with war on the horizon and a cicada-shaped birthmark on her foot. Her father melted gold and cast a cicada for her, naming her Chengyu, hoping her heart would be as pure as jade. Yet this treasured gift became the prelude to a lifetime of suffering. Her mother resented her as a “useless girl,” war burned their home to the ground, and her father was killed by a bayonet. For a sack of life-saving flour, she was married off at thirteen to a lame man. Then, for a sack of rice to keep them alive, she married again, this time to an ugly pauper. At thirty, she fell completely into eternal darkness.
But the darkness never swallowed her light...
The author's words are rigorous and the description is sincere and not false. It seems that Heisuke's narration is straightforward, but it is very thorough. Depressed emotions are attached to the bleak growth rings, displayed frame by frame with delicate brushstrokes. The negative effects after reading are in sharp contrast to the vividness of current life. It is a very thoughtful and readable work.
It was well written, and it made me cry and it made me see the desire for knowledge and the fighting spirit of self-improvement of a generation of women. I am grateful that she has an enlightened father who holds a guiding light for her.
I wanted to cry after reading it, I feel so distressed, but it is very true. Women can be daughters, sisters, mothers, and even supermen. However, women can also be despised and ignored, like dispensable cloth, and the epitome of feudal society. Thank you for the new China that our ancestors bought with their blood. Country, I am also grateful to the unknown heroes who have contributed to the motherland, and to the author for writing a simple but touching and vivid story, which allows us to learn to see the light in hardship, smell the spring breeze, and be like a cicada at any time, emerging from the cocoon and singing summer!
The author's writing is meticulous and the plot is gripping. Although the suffering life has not erased Chengyu's tenacity, kindness and transparency. Awaiting continued updates from the author.
