Identity V: When the Song Ends and the Pen Falls Silent, Waiting for One Who Won't Return

It began in the height of summer and ended in the depths of winter.

A rising star of British literature met a once-legendary figure of the French music scene.

They met, and came to know each other.

“Mr. Orpheus, how was my performance?”

“I know little about music, but your playing is enough to make the world pale in comparison.”

“Sir… do you truly feel nothing else for me?”

“Anything else? I'm sorry, I… don't know.”

“What an idiot.”

…

Years later, among hundreds of letters from frenzied admirers, he found the one letter that was unlike any other.

“Dear Mr. Kreiburg… This Friday, I'll be attending a book club in town. I hope to see you there.”

A rich fragrance lingered on the paper, the familiar scent he had worn for years, comforting and reassuring.

The elegant handwriting on the other end was just as familiar and dear.

“Long time no see, idiot.”

They never spoke their love aloud. That was what they both regretted in their final moments.

…

The song ends, and the pen falls still.

I wait in the forest of no return for someone who will never return.

The cornflowers blooming in the sunlight are my silent love for you.

If I should leave, bury me here.

My music will sing only for you, just as it did in years past.
