Parentheses: A Positive-Energy Novel
[Apocalypse Premonition + Swordsmanship + Prodigy + Decisive and Ruthless + Hidden Identity + A Touch of World-Creation + For All Readers]
What horrors and powers lie hidden in the depths of the universe?
Where did the insect race, older than antiquity itself, come from?
In 2040, the first phase of the Great Xia Southern Heavenly Gate Project was completed.
The apocalypse was coming. The extraordinary were rising, and the unknown was awakening.
That same year, a mysterious piece of lightning-struck wood completely changed one boy’s fate.
Dark clouds gathered as heaven and earth split apart. Three figures stood atop a flood that blotted out the sky, facing off against a gigantic eye in the heavens.
The clang of metal on metal rang out across the dimensions of time. In the primeval forest, people whose faces were impossible to make out built one crude dwelling after another from branches and sticks.
Men and women coupled. Stone struck against sweetgrass, sparking a flame. An old man bent down, picked up an unfamiliar plant, and put it in his mouth.
War, chaos, crowds of people, slaughter and revelry. Howling winds, swirling sand, and relentless downpours. Some wore tiger-skin skirts and wielded long swords; some marched forward with torches; others covered themselves in bronze armor.
People dressed in all manner of clothes stood atop chairs covered in animal hide.
Someone split heaven and earth with one hand. Gods dwelled among the mountains and rivers, yet they were powerless to do anything.
The gods had withdrawn from the mortal world.
So many figures flashed by in an instant, each gentle and refined, chatting and laughing as they spoke of heaven and earth.
Some sat and discussed the Dao; others wore armor and expanded their territories.
A man dressed in a black imperial robe climbed step by step to the throne, then swept his sleeve toward the sky in offering.
He called himself the “Emperor.”
[A vortex spanning past and present, East and West, and a scheme thousands of years in the making.]
