The Price of Time

What is the price of rewriting history?

She knew there would be a price for rewriting history. For a long time after taking up her pen and writing history anew, she had no idea what she had paid. She only felt that life was peaceful and the world was safe, as if she could simply wait for her life to come to an end. But little by little, she realized that through all those long years, she had tried to understand the two lovers who had been part of both her previous life and this one, yet she had never understood her true self. She had once received their love, but had never truly loved herself. Instead, she had survived in a hollow shell, sustained only by tiny, scattered fragments of memory.

Years later, when Run Ling returned to that bitterly cold place that had once held so much of her blood and tears, she touched the snowflakes covering the ground and looked at the wooden house she and her lover had built with their own hands, now long buried beneath the snow. Only then did she understand the price Fu Na had once spoken of.
