In 2012, the chairman of a publicly listed company was accused of murdering an entire family after an attempted rape. An investigation by the Suian Public Security Bureau produced conclusive evidence. The Suian People's Court found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to death. He did not appeal the verdict, instead ending his own life in prison. The case caused a huge stir throughout society, and public debate erupted across the media.
Over the next five years, more and more details of the case came to light. In an effort to quiet the controversy, the Suian Public Security Bureau formed several temporary task forces, but each was forced to disband, either because investigators could not build a chain of evidence or because they met with accidents. Then, one day, five years later, a seemingly simple murder case once again brought the old case into the public eye.
