The story unfolds through the loves and grudges of several people, depicting the complexity of their relationships and the depth of their changing emotions:
In the desolate, windswept Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff lives with Hareton, the son he has raised. Heathcliff is handsome but ruthless; Hareton is an orphan left behind by Heathcliff and his late wife. Also living at the manor are Joseph, the housekeeper, and the beautiful, headstrong Catherine Earnshaw, daughter of the Linton family. In a moment of impulse, Catherine marries Heathcliff, but her heart is often with Edgar, the Linton family's son.
