Synopsis

In the final years of the Ming dynasty, the eunuch faction led by Wei Zhongxian seized power, throwing the court into chaos and persecuting anyone who opposed them. When the new emperor took the throne, he purged the faction. Wei Zhongxian killed himself out of fear of punishment, while his followers were either demoted or imprisoned.

The new emperor appointed Cao Huachun of the Directorate of Ceremonial to investigate and overturn wrongful convictions from the previous reign, and to hunt down the remnants of Wei Zhongxian’s faction. Though the faction had fallen, it had once wielded enormous power, and its members were deeply entrenched throughout the government. Eradicating them all would take time.

Among them, thirteen senior members had fled. Some hid among the jianghu, while others sought refuge with the Jurchens beyond the frontier. The court had begun to see a measure of order, but turmoil still gripped the realm. The previous reign had left behind countless abuses, and rebellions were breaking out across the land. The Jurchens beyond the frontier had raised their armies and were growing ever stronger. Within the palace, factions harbored their own ambitions, vying for power as tensions simmered beneath the surface.

The Chongzhen Emperor ordered Cao Huachun, chief eunuch of the Directorate of Ceremonial, and Tian Huairen, chief of the Eastern Depot, to select thirteen capable members of the Embroidered Uniform Guard and form a special task force called the Thirteen Auspicious Ones. Their mission was to hunt down the thirteen most wanted remnants of Wei Zhongxian’s faction and seek justice for those who had been wrongfully condemned to death. Thirteen against thirteen: a calculated game of cat and mouse, played in the name of justice, was about to begin.

Before anyone realized it, events slipped out of control and headed toward an ending no one could have foreseen.

The first volume, A Blade Without an Edge, marks the beginning of this game of cat and mouse. A grand scheme, which its mastermind believes to be brilliant, slowly unfolds behind the scenes. But unpredictable twists and frequent surprises exceed the player’s expectations and control. When the first half of the game has already brought it close to checkmate, only the pieces themselves can decide what happens next…
