Japanese Military Devastation and Economic Decline in the Jiangnan Region: 1937-1945

This book takes the economic development of the Beijing-Shanghai-Hangzhou region during the Japanese occupation as the research object, and points out that Japan's economic policy towards the occupied areas was mainly destruction, plunder and control and utilization. Due to the plunder of the Japanese army, the rural areas of Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou, which had always been known as the land of plenty, suffered from long-term famine during the Japanese occupation, and even suffered from extreme lack of food. The entire sideline economy in the rural areas of Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou, including sericulture, forestry, cotton, fishery and handicrafts, were severely damaged. The number of rural people affected by the disaster and bankrupted was unprecedented. What is particularly distressing is that this war of aggression interrupted the modernization process of the rural areas of Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou, and blocked the improvement, construction, and social development of the rural areas of Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou.
