Rich and vibrant, ethnic music is an important part of ethnic culture and a source of inspiration for many great works. It embodies the free spirit of its age, noble moral sentiments, profound ideas, and distinctive ethnic identities, as well as shared characteristics and aesthetic tastes. Drawing on the methods and theories of ethnomusicology, this book focuses on traditional Chinese ethnic music theory. It examines the definition and classification of ethnic music, its musical systems and branches, the formal characteristics of these systems, and genres such as folk songs, folk dance music, folk instrumental music, and narrative singing.
Building on the convergence of ethnic music cultures from China and abroad, the book draws widely on outstanding musical traditions around the world, incorporating ethnic music from Asia, Africa, Oceania, Europe, and the Americas. It also presents a carefully selected collection of representative traditional folk songs, bringing theoretical discussion to life through practical experience. The book broadens students’ horizons and strengthens their musical literacy while highlighting the inclusive nature of the field. It also helps ensure the healthy transmission of ethnic music as it continues to develop over time.
The book places special emphasis on innovation in its logical framework and teaching methods. Its content is comprehensive, its focus clear, and its structure both rigorous and fresh. Combining theory with practice, it is well suited to teaching while also offering academic value. It contributes to promoting outstanding ethnic music traditions, passing on cultural heritage, and advancing the development of ethnic music.
This book is very informative and gave me a deeper understanding of ethnic music. I like the part about folk songs in the book, especially the Tibetan and Uyghur folk songs, the melodies are so beautiful. But I hate those complicated theoretical knowledge, it seems a bit boring. Luckily there are also a lot of fun songs and stories that make this book interesting. I think this book is a good book worth reading for people who like ethnic music.
