The story centers on a mysterious murder case. The police investigate the death of a mysterious beggar, but as the case grows increasingly complex and bizarre, an underground base joins the investigation. They eventually uncover the beggar’s mysterious identity and the killer’s extraordinary abilities.
Just as the case begins to make progress and the police track the investigation to a mysterious villa, a cruise ship belonging to a seaside tourism company sets out to sea with more than five hundred passengers aboard, only to mysteriously vanish in the East China Sea. The police who reach the villa suffer heavy casualties. In the end, they are sucked through a space-time portal along with Qin Ming and Lu Yue, arriving in the City of Dead Souls as captives of Xingtian.
After entering the City of Dead Souls, Qin Ming agrees to help Xingtian find the head that was severed during his battle with the Yellow Emperor, Xuanyuan, in order to save Du Qin and the others. Police officer Zhao Nansheng, Qin Ming, and Lu Yue return to the human world, where they eventually meet a mysterious old man in a remote town. The man belongs to the Xuanyuan clan, whose members were charged with guarding Xingtian’s head. In the end, the old man passes the Xuanyuan clan’s divine power on to Qin Ming.
Carrying the head, Qin Ming returns to the City of Dead Souls from the base, which is now under Xingtian’s control. Once Xingtian gets the head, he decides to return to the human world and conquer it. But he dies mysteriously while reattaching his head. Jiang Yang accidentally obtains his divine power and nearly becomes the next ruler of the City of Dead Souls. Ambitious Jiang Yang wants to continue his conquest of the human world, so Qin Ming awakens the power within himself and battles him, ultimately defeating him.
In the end, the City of Dead Souls sinks, and the others return to the human world. Everything begins anew.
