I, Chen Mo, was an S-rank squad leader. I led my team through hundreds of S-rank zombie hordes and S-rank beast tides, and we survived. I was a legend, ranked among the best in the number of zombies and mutant beasts I killed.
I’m dead?
Hah. I died in quite a dramatic fashion. My teammates, who had stood by me through decades of life and death, stabbed me in the back for the fruit of the Tree of Life.
I can understand. I knew exactly what kind of people they were. I’d simply never stopped cherishing all those years we spent side by side.
I brought this fate upon myself.
I kept hoping my sincerity would melt their hearts, but unfortunately...
Still, one thing comforted me, and filled me with remorse: not everyone had betrayed me.
She hadn’t let me down.
The fierce battle in the city would soon draw in the zombies, and all the more so with me as their enemy.
I showed no mercy to anyone who betrayed me. I fought with everything I had to protect those who helped me. Thankfully, I held out, and that little girl was rescued at the last moment.
I still remember the last thing I saw before losing consciousness: she was badly wounded, held back by people, screaming herself hoarse as she called out, “Captain...”
I was so tired. So very tired.
The level-ten Zombie King sank its teeth into my neck. I knew I wasn’t going to make it.
I also knew the destruction I’d cause to the hard-won base city if I turned into a zombie. So I blew myself up.
At the very last moment before the explosion, I seemed to hear something: “Beep. Host death detected. Initiating world transfer.”
