Zhaohua's Farewell: The Empress Returns to Court

In the thirty-ninth year of Yongle under the Li Dynasty, corruption festered throughout the court. General Jing seized power, usurped the throne, and forced his way into the palace. The Emperor and Empress of Li both took their own lives in their bedchamber, leaving behind only Princess Zhaohua, who was fourteen, and entrusting her to Mu Xingzhi, a sixteen-year-old young general.

To show the new emperor’s benevolence, Emperor Ye spared Chao Qing'an. The former dynasty’s princess lived through those difficult times, while Mu Xingzhi, the general who had once promised to protect her for the rest of her life, grew more and more distant.
