When I was thirteen, a line of bloody writing inexplicably appeared on my desk:
“Remember! Never let anyone know you’re good at studying!! Especially Mom!”
From then on, I kept up the act until I was eighteen and about to start my final year of high school.
Everyone knew I had bad grades and would struggle even to get into a vocational college.
Only I knew I was about to crush the college entrance exams.
When the old man next door heard about it, he called my mom and said,
“Have your daughter take good care of me. That’ll be better than her failing to get into college and having to find some job.”
“My pension is ten thousand a month. Your daughter gets one thousand, and I get nine thousand.”
My mom readily agreed. That way, he wouldn’t be a lonely old man anymore, and I’d have a job. If I took especially good care of him, I might even inherit his estate...
At that moment, the bloody writing appeared again...
