In 1927, after Chiang Kai-shek openly rebelled against the revolution, Hunan warlord Xu Kexiang instigated the "Ma-Japanese Incident" in Changsha and sent bandit commander Chen Hanbiao and more than a thousand men to invade Yaoshan in southern Hunan in an attempt to open an anti-communist base on the border between Hunan and Guangxi.
