This book truly depicts the human nature of that special era. I sympathize with Li Shuqin's experience, and I feel for her helpless choice to survive. I have been in a similar predicament and understand the helplessness and confusion. The character Wang Dangsheng is really annoying, and his despicable behavior is disgusting. However, the book's portrayal of human nature and reflections on life resonated with me a lot and made me cherish my current life even more.
