Based on historical events, this story recounts the events surrounding the Tang Empire’s destruction of Goguryeo during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang.
During Emperor Gaozong’s reign, the vassal states on the Korean Peninsula paid lip service to the Tang Empire while secretly defying it. Enraged, the emperor ordered renowned generals Liu Rengui, Li Ji, Su Dingfang, Xue Rengui, Qibi Heli, and others to lead an eastern campaign. On this land, our forebears overcame countless hardships: they destroyed Baekje, defeated Wa (Japan), reclaimed Liaodong, pacified Goguryeo, and subdued Silla, leaving behind stirring tales of heroism.
This book is written in a style brimming with heroic spirit. It aims to showcase our forebears’ strategic brilliance and courage, inspire us to follow their example, and remind us to shoulder the burden of defending our homeland and securing peace. As the final lines say: “In times of prosperity, do not forget the sorrows of the past; every inch of our land is stained with blood. We must aspire to reach the clouds, defending and expanding our borders, our deeds remembered for a thousand years.”
