Wei Qing of the Han Dynasty: From Slave Groom to General

This is a biographical novel about Wei Qing, a renowned general of the Western Han dynasty.

The Wei family was originally a family of officials, but after falling into disgrace, they were confiscated by the government and made slaves, then granted to the Prince of Pingyang's household. Wei Ao had two sons and three daughters, and struggled to make ends meet after her husband died. After Princess Yangxin married the Marquis of Pingyang, she recognized talent in the three girls and taught them to sing and dance. She also trained the young Wei Qing in horsemanship and archery. Later, she presented her third daughter, Wei Zifu, and Wei Qing to Emperor Wu of Han, Liu Che. Years later, Wei Zifu became empress, while Wei Qing was appointed a general by Emperor Wu. He led seven campaigns against the Xiongnu and won every battle. His nephew Huo Qubing also attacked the Xiongnu six times, achieving great victories each time. Wei Qing and Huo Qubing respectively recovered and captured the regions of Henan and Hexi, then crushed the main Xiongnu forces in a decisive battle in the northern deserts, ending the grave threat the Xiongnu had long posed to the Han empire. Wei Qing was skilled at sustaining his armies through the spoils of war and dared to lead his troops deep into enemy territory. As a general, he enforced discipline strictly, treated his soldiers with care and kindness, and was generous and courteous to his colleagues. Though he rose to the highest ranks, he never built a private power base. In the fifth year of the Yuanfeng era, Wei Qing died while serving as Grand General and Marquis of Changping. His tomb was built in the shape of Mount Lu, beside Emperor Wu's mausoleum at Maoling.

The author has a thorough command of Qin and Han history and customs, covering everything from astronomy and geography to the lives and traditions of ordinary people. The prose is at times elegant and restrained, at others vivid and lively, blending historical depth with compelling storytelling. Its characters come vividly to life. Wei Qing is kind, cautious, and a brilliant strategist; Princess Pingyang is beautiful, clever, bold, and resourceful; Emperor Wu is a ruler of great ambition, yet deeply suspicious. Even Huo Qubing, energetic and quick-witted, and Li Guang, fierce but short on strategy, are sharply drawn through concise, precise descriptions of their actions and speech, despite receiving relatively little attention.
