In Dream of the Red Chamber, the love story of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu is one of the novel’s central themes. Their tragic romance is deeply moving and reflects the many constraints and helplessness of feudal society.
Jia Baoyu is a young master of the Jia family. Naturally intelligent, he is also rebellious and dislikes the restrictions imposed by feudal etiquette. Lin Daiyu is Jia Mu’s granddaughter. Clever and sensitive, she is pessimistic about life and the future. The two have known each other since childhood and grew up together, gradually developing deep feelings for each other. However, their love is obstructed by feudal etiquette and family interests.
In feudal society, marriages were often arranged by parents, and free love between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu was not permitted. Moreover, the elders of the Jia family believe that Lin Daiyu is too frail to be Jia Baoyu’s wife and favor Xue Baochai instead. Under these circumstances, the couple’s romance becomes increasingly difficult.
Despite the many obstacles they face, Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu remain devoted to each other. They express their longing and affection through poetry, letters, and other means. In the end, however, Lin Daiyu dies amid gloom and despair. After losing her, Jia Baoyu is left heartbroken and eventually becomes a monk.
