Su Huiyun, a descendant of the Red Revolution, overcomes one obstacle after another and finally reaches the shores of victory. She meets a poor young man by chance, and the two support each other as they marry and climb to the heights of success, looking down on both banks of the Pu River. But then her best friend comes between them. Stricken with cancer, Su Huiyun discovers their affair while pregnant and plummets to rock bottom. In the end, the people she placed her faith in all meet unhappy fates. Their tangled romance will eventually fade like a passing cloud, and only her child brings her comfort.
