Late Ming: Ask the Heavens

In the late Ming dynasty, a new emperor takes the throne as drought and plague ravage the land. People flee their homes, wars rage, and families resort to eating their own children. Yao Liang is a young fisherwoman with a sick mother, a little brother, and a father. Their fishing boat is requisitioned, so she has to use her mind-reading ability to make a living gambling at the market. Then disaster strikes: her family is slaughtered, and only Yao Liang survives because she was away. A sachet hidden beneath the bed is the only clue to the killers' identity. Disguised as a boy, Yao Liang travels from city to city in search of answers. She never expects the culprit to be Chu Jianyi, a swordsman from Luoyang. Using her mind-reading ability, Yao Liang gets close to him. After all manner of trials, they are hunted by the Prince of Luoyang. They head north to Xuzhou to seek out Chu Jianyi's friend. In the chaos of war, the two of them, alone together, develop unexpected feelings. In the end, hatred consumes them, and regret brings everything to a close.
