The Legendary Lives of the Twelve Qing Emperors

The Twelve Emperors of the Qing Dynasty vividly depicts the turbulent lives and historical legacies of the twelve rulers of China’s last feudal dynasty, the Qing. Spanning nearly three centuries of upheaval, it begins with Nurhaci uniting the Jurchen tribes and founding Later Jin, and ends with the final emperor, Puyi, making his subdued exit. The book portrays Nurhaci’s grand ambitions and Hong Taiji’s achievements in both civil and military affairs, as well as the untimely death of Shunzhi, or Fulin, and the literary and military prowess with which Kangxi, or Xuanye, pacified the realm.

The forceful reforms of Yongzheng, or Yinzhen, and the flourishing age of Qianlong, or Hongli, reveal the Qing’s early peak. Jiaqing and Daoguang struggle to turn back the decline of national power; Xianfeng faces domestic turmoil and foreign threats; and Tongzhi and Guangxu attempt reforms under the shadow of Cixi. Their struggles all reflect the Qing’s decline from prosperity to decay. By the reign of Xuantong, or Puyi, the dynasty finally comes to an end amid upheaval.

This is not merely a collection of imperial biographies, but also a microcosm of the Qing dynasty and modern Chinese history. Through the emperors’ personal fates, it reflects the deeper meaning of dynastic change and social transformation. With a distinctive perspective and detailed historical sources, the author takes readers on a journey through the currents of history, inviting them to experience the emperors’ joys and sorrows at the heights of power and amid the tides of their times, and inspiring deep reflection on both history and the present.
