Reading many of Hauff's fairy tales feels less like reading fairy tales and more like reading short stories. There are stories within stories, a series of several seemingly unrelated stories, and the people in the stories are storytellers. It is very complicated and interesting. Only after reading all the stories will you understand the connection and suddenly realize it. But sometimes it's like a fairy tale, somewhere between a fairy tale and a novel.
