Maizhai in Xiangyi County is a thousand-year-old town. In 1986, after graduating from Maizhai Senior High School and entering the History Department at Yuzhou University, Mai Xin received a family genealogy titled The Mai-Dou Family Legacy, handwritten by Mai Gao, a retired teacher, before leaving home for university. It was a rare genealogy combining two surnames into one. Mai Xin carried it everywhere, studying it intently, and eventually traced the family's roots to reconstruct the dramatic history of Maizhai, from its humble beginnings to its rise and growth.
