The Summer Breeze Has Returned

When summer arrived this year, Grandpa took out an old photograph of himself with his friends when he was young. He told her that their families had once agreed to a match between their grandchildren. Recently, he'd reunited with one of his old army buddies, who also had a grandson around her age, and wanted the two of them to meet.

She met him at the coffee shop where they'd arranged to meet: the boy from her memories who was always grinning and teasing her. But he looked at her like a stranger he'd never met before, his expression cool as he greeted her in a formal, perfunctory way.

The winds of that midsummer had blown back again.

Ten years earlier

One summer evening, he stood on the classroom balcony, gazing into the distance as he took a break. As he looked toward the tree-lined avenue, she happened to ride her bicycle through campus.

A ray of evening sunlight slipped through the treetops and fell on her. Just like that, the girl in the white uniform with a high ponytail found her way into his heart. He often went out of his way to tease her...

He'd planned to confess his feelings after the college entrance exams, but unexpectedly transferred schools in his senior year. Before leaving, he found her and said with a grin, “I'm transferring schools! You can't forget me, okay? Keep in touch on QQ!”

The boy who'd cheerfully promised to keep in touch before transferring disappeared into the crowd. He never replied to a single QQ message she sent.

And so, the stirrings of young love drifted away with the June breeze, through that summer, and were buried there.
