Do You Still Remember Me Today?

Yusheng had a strange illness: from time to time, she would forget, then remember again.

Summer was noisy, full of the steady chorus of cicadas.

Huai City was full of locust trees. Locust blossoms drifted through the sky, but somehow could never fly beyond the city.

“My name is Xia Mingsheng. Do you remember me?”

At the turn of the stairs, she met a childhood playmate.

“I remember you, Xia Mingsheng.”

Yusheng had never forgotten him, not until she came down with the strange illness.

She forgot him, and forgot her beloved, her younger brother, and even herself.

Huai City was beautiful, but it wasn’t her hometown.

She vaguely remembered that her hometown was called Huai Town. There were locust trees covering the hills, white locust blossoms veiled in mist, and the child she used to be.

Huai Town was a place she longed for but could never reach. She wanted to return there in the years she had left.

There were so many people in Huai City, and Yusheng often forgot them.

“I’m Xiang Xiao. Have you forgotten me?”

“Shengsheng, I miss you so much.”

Yusheng’s remaining years were brief.

When the summer cicadas finally fell silent, she too would return to the earth, fragrant with locust blossoms.
