By combining the traditional history of elite thought with the method of "new cultural history", this book conducts a systematic and in-depth examination and interpretation of the gestation, formation, development and connotation of modern Chinese national concepts.
The book discusses the Anshi Rebellion in the Tang Dynasty and the formation and impact of the subsequent vassal system, and analyzes the changes in the geopolitical pattern and the evolution of military strategies in Henan, Guanzhong, Hebei, Jianghuai and other regions during the vassal era.
Based on rich historical materials, the author reveals the spatial reconstruction of the Tang Empire, the reconstruction of central authority and the adjustment of regional policies in response to internal and external troubles, and presents the impact of these changes on the transformation of social classes.
Through in-depth analysis of Henan, Guanzhong, Hebei, Jianghuai and other regions, this book not only shows the political, military and cultural characteristics of the feudal era, but also reveals the profound impact of these changes on the end of the Tang Empire.

Quite exciting. Through the evolution process of the four vassal towns, the local situation in the middle and late Tang Dynasty was sorted out. The structure is clear and the analysis is presented vividly through various clues. The best thing is that I can put forward my own opinions many times on the basis of previous research and reconstruct the existing historical narrative. Highly recommended! ! !
This book is like a fascinating mystery novel! The author's writing style is clear and crisp, allowing me to easily understand the complex historical plot. The description in the book of the separation of princes after the "An-Shi Rebellion" is wonderful. I seemed to have seen the changes of that era. Moreover, interpreting history from the perspective of feudal towns gave me a new perspective on medieval history. I found it very interesting. I recommend it!
Good-looking, super good-looking
The most valuable book I have read so far in 2025
The Anshi Rebellion was just the trigger, and various internal conflicts have accumulated for more than a day or two.
It's not a novel or a history book, but together it's quite enjoyable.
