Special Forces in the Tang Dynasty

The Special Forces of the Tang Dynasty begins with three modern-day special forces soldiers transmigrating to the turbulent period between the end of the Sui and the beginning of the Tang. Lin Gang, Yang Fei, and Li Hu inhabit historical figures and carry out their mission to protect others amid the flames of war. Centered on the idea that “human hearts can carry on,” the novel weaves together five storylines: the main plot, the Man in Black, the Seven Luminaries, the return, and travel between two worlds. It brings fourteen vividly realized characters to life and portrays the sacrifices and legacy passed down through generations. The story closely follows real historical events, including Wang Shichong declaring himself emperor and the Battle of Hulao, skillfully blending fiction with fact. Its prose is concise and restrained, and its emotions are powerful without becoming overwrought. Alongside the special forces’ fiery battles, it explores the love, hatred, and eventual acceptance of people living through a chaotic age, as well as extraordinary visions of the future. Though the Man in Black storyline is somewhat underdeveloped and some characters receive uneven attention, the novel as a whole feels authentic and moving. Through one heart-piercing moment after another, it composes a tragic song of war and a vision of a flourishing age, all about protection, legacy, and “living on for someone else.” It is well worth reading.
