Appreciating Calligraphy

To fully implement the Party's educational policy and vigorously promote quality education, the Ministry of Education issued the National Guidelines for Public Arts Courses at Regular Institutions of Higher Education, requiring universities nationwide to offer public arts electives, including Calligraphy Appreciation. To carry out the Ministry of Education's directive and teach Calligraphy Appreciation effectively, we compiled this textbook, Calligraphy Appreciation. Calligraphy is the art of writing Chinese characters. Throughout their long history of development, Chinese characters have served important functions, such as communication and the transmission of culture, while also giving rise to a unique visual art form: calligraphy. Calligraphy is an abstract art of symbols based on Chinese characters. Through the use of lines, it reflects beauty and expresses people's aesthetic sensibilities, brought to life through the calligrapher's mastery of technique. Calligraphy appreciation refers to the viewing, interpretation, and analysis of calligraphic works. It is an advanced spiritual activity and plays a very important role in improving university students' overall qualities. Following a historical and practical framework, this textbook introduces the origins and development of calligraphy, its major artists, and important works. It is of great value in cultivating university students' cultural literacy.
