The male lead, the master's name is Bai Juan. His name comes from the medicinal herb juan bai, which grows among rocks throughout its life and is used to relieve pain, disperse blood stasis, and stop bleeding. Like the protagonist Bai Juan, he has had a difficult life, yet still shields others from the rain!
The disciple's name is Xing Nansheng. His name comes from the medicinal herb sheng nanxing. It can be dangerous: eating it by mistake can cause anything from difficulty breathing to life-threatening consequences. On the positive side, it disperses nodules and reduces swelling. Like the Xing Nansheng in this story, he can make you feel like you're in a spring breeze when he's good, but when he's bad, he'll kill you!
Together, juan bai and sheng nanxing disperse blood stasis, stop bleeding, reduce swelling, and relieve pain! The two characters are just like these herbs: they hurt each other, fall in love, then hurt each other again! Now you know where their names come from.
