The Chrysanthemum and the Sword (Original English Edition)

This book is presented entirely in English. It is the renowned classic by American anthropologist Ruth Benedict, a well-known study of Japanese character and culture, and an essential read for anyone seeking to understand Japan. The serene, graceful chrysanthemum is the emblem of the Japanese imperial family, while the fierce, uncompromising sword symbolizes the samurai code. Beginning with Japanese ways of life and representative events, the book discusses Japan’s views on war and goes on to the Meiji Restoration. Through the images of the chrysanthemum and the sword, it reveals the contradictions in Japanese character, and the dual nature of Japanese culture: a love of beauty alongside militarism, politeness alongside aggression, an appetite for novelty alongside stubbornness, and obedience alongside defiance. It then analyzes the hierarchy of Japanese society and its customs, arguing that the discontinuity between the upbringing of young children and their later education is an important factor in forming this dual character. The book helps us grasp the Japanese “nature” directly and accurately.
