The protagonist is terminally ill and jumps to his death. His soul possesses a boy named Tang Xuan’an, and he thinks that being reborn will give him a fresh start.
But from the start, he finds himself dressed in rags and “selling himself to bury his mother.” A wealthy local landowner buys and takes him in, making him think he’s met a good person. Little does he know the man has other motives.
He wants to exploit Tang Xuan’an’s “kindness” to take his life and seize his soul, completing his plan to return to life in another body.
But the protagonist sees through him and accidentally releases a female ghost. The wealthy landowner’s whole family is slaughtered. Yet the ghost is consumed by resentment and lacks part of her soul. She must kill the demonic priest who used her to train his soul before she can enter the cycle of reincarnation.
Moved by the female ghost’s past, protagonist Tang Xuan’an decides to help her pursue the killer a thousand miles, stop the demonic priest, and reclaim her soul.
Along the way, they encounter many bizarre unsolved cases and strange, amusing tales...
