The Four Great Families' annual supernatural powers tournament is about to begin. The Nan family has been in decline, and to protect their son and daughter from harm during the competition, they bring back an illegitimate daughter from the countryside and send her to compete.
They say the girl is both tacky and ugly. The family plans to give her some money and send her on her way after the tournament, assuming she's still alive.
But to everyone's surprise, the girl really does know the Nan family's secret arts, and she makes a sensation at the competition, even attracting the attention of Kyoto's powerful families. One of them immediately sends over a marriage contract, naming her as the future young madam of the Shi family!
