That day, a friend asked her why she'd chosen him of all people.
Han Mo didn't answer. She thought of that night at the club, when the man had knelt at her feet, trembling all over, with nothing but "Please, I'm begging you" coming out of his mouth. The light fell on his damp neck, making him look like a fish pulled from the water, about to slip right back in at any moment.
She hadn't held on to that image for long. What she remembered was something else he'd said.
"Because he said he'd behave," Han Mo replied, her tone so flat it sounded like she was recounting something that had little to do with her.
"And then?"
"Then I took him with me."
She turned her head. There was a hint of a smile in her eyes, though its warmth was hard to place. "I never thought he'd stay by my side for so long."
Just then, her phone rang. The name "[Heart] Chen" popped up on the screen. She glanced at it and didn't answer right away. Her finger hovered over the screen for two seconds before she finally swiped to pick up.
His voice came through close and soft, with the slight rasp of someone who'd just woken up. "When are you coming back?"
Han Mo didn't answer. She only asked, "Did you sleep well?"
"Mm. I'm waiting for you."
Four months ago, at the end of a school corridor, she heard someone asking a cat, "What are you going to do this winter?"
Four months later, that person was kneeling at her feet, clutching her pant leg and begging her to save him.
She had asked him then: "Will you behave?"
He had said: "I'll behave."
So she took him with her.
As for which of them couldn't live without the other later on, that was another matter.
