Wine Country

The following is some of my superficial understanding. This book is simply a novel within a novel. Ding Gou'er's line was written by "Mo Yan" in the novel. Li Yidou's letters and short stories inspired "Mo Yan" to conceive "Wine Country" (that is, Ding Gou'er's line). (Some plots and details in "Wine Country" echo the content in Li Yidou's letters and short stories) Whether it is "fictional" (the plot of "Wine Country" in the novel, the plot of Li Yidou's short story) or "real" ("Mo Yan's" experience of participating in the Ape Wine Festival, the letters exchanged between "Li Yidou" and "Mo Yan"), they all revolve around the "wine table culture", where there is wine but it is not just about wine. It criticized all kinds of bad social customs after the reform and opening up, focusing on the corruption in the officialdom in the 1990s, including officials accepting bribes and not doing their jobs properly.

After reading "Wine Country", I was left with three unsolvable paradoxes: First, being completely awake means being unable to understand this essentially absurd world, while being completely intoxicated means becoming part of the system. Second, the great thing about Mo Yan is that he refuses to offer cheap solutions, but insists on maintaining a dangerous balance between literary drunkenness and sobriety. Third, perhaps true wisdom does not lie in choosing to be sober or intoxicated, but in realizing the limitations of this choice itself; real resistance does not lie in refusing to drink, but in seeing through the rules of the power game at the wine table.

It is abstract and extremely scary to think about. When writing about wine, it is also about society. The final feeling of "getting involved" echoes the previous article. It seems that no one can resist the temptation of wine (perhaps mixed with complicated interpersonal relationships). The world after drunkenness is also very magical, and you can feel that Ding Gouer's spirit is collapsing step by step. I was a bit confused at first, but later I discovered that it was written by Ding Gou'er and Li Yidou in two lines. To be more precise, there should be a third line of "Mo Yan" at the end. It's amazing. The foreshadowing in the article is well laid out and interlocking. Although I personally find it difficult to read, it is still worth reading.

This may not be Mo Yan's best work, but it really made me understand how shallow and low-level I am, and how low I feel about myself.
