Wherever there are people, there are politics. Politics aren’t about fighting and killing; they’re about relationships and human nature.

Young Lao Chen worked for ten years at a municipal construction company, rotating through roles as a site supervisor, surveyor, and construction manager.

When the property market was booming, Lao Chen quit and went into business as a subcontractor. At one point, he led a team of one or two hundred people. That was the high point of his career.

Later, for reasons no one knew, Lao Chen lost money on construction projects. He sold all his machinery and equipment, laid off his workers, and went alone to work for a construction supervision company. The construction worker Lao Chen became the site supervisor Lao Chen.

Lao Chen lived through the real estate boom as a participant, a builder, and a witness to the era’s glory and decline. He may be an ordinary man, but his life and love affairs have been anything but ordinary.
