[Strong female lead + supernatural mystery + ghost hunting + folk horror + a touch of ensemble cast + plot-driven]
[Hot-tempered ghost-hunting girl X sharp-tongued but immortal patriarch]
While her master is away, ghost-hunting girl Shi Yu encounters Xu Wei, a being that is neither human nor something else. He claims to be her fellow disciple and senior brother, who went mad while practicing cultivation.
The two set out to recover the body of a bullied girl, which has been stolen by an evil creature known as a Skin-Stealing Wraith. To their surprise, the creature seems to have some connection to Xu Wei.
By a twist of fate, the two and their friend Han Yang set off for an ancient town. Along the way, they meet Xu Ruoxuan, a ghost-hunting Daoist, and start off on the wrong foot before becoming friends. Meanwhile, the mystery buried beneath the Skin-Stealing Wraith grows ever deeper. Their journey is full of danger: deep forests, strange beasts, spirit coffins, underground palaces, corpse formations...
As Shi Yu investigates the mystery, she discovers that Xu Wei is no senior brother of hers. He is a legendary powerhouse who strode through the world of Daoist arts a thousand years ago.
Shi Yu jumps up and demands, “You old monster, what are you really after, hiding by my side?”
“After?”
Xu Wei presses down on the hand holding her blade with a fingertip and says with a smile,
“I’ve taken a liking to you.”
Shi Yu: “Keep talking nonsense and I’ll cut you down!”
Xu Wei smiles confidently. “I bet you couldn’t bring yourself to.”
Shi Yu: “...”
