Tales of Chivalry from Cangshan

Set during the Republican era in the mountains of western Zhejiang, this novel follows a group of young martial heroes on a quest to protect a treasure. It celebrates the beauty of the motherland’s landscapes, culture, and Chinese martial arts, serving as a heartfelt tribute to their hometown and country.

The book is politically sound and artistically meticulous. Alongside its storytelling, it pays particular attention to cultural depth, moral complexity, and the distinctive charm of literary language, striving to offer readers a deeply moving and culturally resonant experience.

Key features:

Formal innovation. Each chapter ends with a classical-style poem, an inventive development of the tradition found in such classics as Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio.

Artful language. The narrative aims to balance solemnity and humor, appealing to both refined and popular tastes. Its serious moments feature poetry and literary composition, while its comic ones make use of colloquial speech and slang.

Rich, substantial content. Ancient customs and traditions, numerous legends, and historical cases weave through the main story as vivid side threads. The profound and extensive culture of martial arts also offers considerable value for study.

Distinctive characters. Loyal or treacherous, honest or slick, mischievous or earnest, each character is vivid and fully realized.

An unusual subject. Xianxia novels set in this historical period are exceedingly rare.

A break from formula and convention. The characters avoid simplistic, stereotyped, or demonized portrayals, and instead come closer to the truth of human nature and everyday life.
